NHS FBLA TAKES HOME 33 AWARDS AT REGIONAL COMPETITION!

Congratulations to the 60 NHS Future Business Leaders of America members and the 32 Regional Competition winners! The competition was held virtually where students took objective tests, production tests and/or taped a performance for judging.  Along with Neshaminy, FBLA chapters from Bensalem, Central Bucks East, West and South, Council Rock North and South, Morrisville, New-Hope Solebury, Palisades, Pennridge, Pennsbury, Quakertown and William Tennent competed in various business events.  24 Neshaminy FBLA students have qualified to compete at the State level in Hershey this April.  7 Neshaminy FBLA students took home First Place!

OVER 500 BCIT STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN 2020 HOUR OF CODE

BCIT classrooms participated in the Annual Hour of Code across the district.

High School students worked with Java Script to create Apps. Some students used block programming to create a sports game, researched the major sponsors of the Hour of Code and were required to report one major sponsor and include the sponsor’s type of business. Students also coded with Minecraft and Dance Party, and used blockly to complete activities and earn certificates.

5^th through 8^th grade BCIT students:

Artificial Intelligence for Oceans was one of most interest to students since it involved training an AI robot to recognize images and remove trash from the ocean.  First students taught the robot to recognize images as either "fish" or "not fish". Next, students had to expand their training data set to include other sea creates that belong in the water.  In the second part of the activity, students developed their own labels to apply to the images of randomly generated fish.  Students enjoyed exploring how machine learning, a type of artificial intelligence, is used to help computers classify new data.  

Students also worked with code in: Minecraft Voyage, Intro to App Lab, Classic Maze, Code Your Own Sports Game, Text Compression, Encryption, Minecraft Designer, Minecraft Hero's Journey, Art, Keep on Dancing, Build your own basketball game, Disney Infinity Play Lab, Star Wars Build a Galaxy, Minecrafter Adventurer, Lightbot, Dance Party and Code Combat.

Hour of Code is a tremendous way to encourage and excite students to possibly explore Computer Science fields. Students said the activities were a challenging and fun experience!

         

FEBRUARY

BCIT Students Place 2nd and 3rd in

Gwynedd Mercy University’s 5^th Annual

Business Case Study Competition

 

Congratulations to the BCIT students who placed 2nd and 3rd in the Gwynedd Mercy University’s 5^th Annual Dual Enrollment High School Case Study Competition.  The 2nd place team, named “Doc’s Orders”, consisted of Jack Brookshaw, Matthew Edwards, Jenna Muller and Matthew Schwab.  The 3rd place team, named “Doc’s Protégées”, were Steven Muller and Kieran O’Neill.  The event was held at Gwynedd Mercy University on February 13th.

The students devoted time after school to analyze a case study and detail the business problems of a family owned company.  Each high school team delivered a presentation that elaborated on current marketing and financial problems.  Teams also delivered a plan that made recommendations for future growth and offered managerial solutions.  The teams were judged by a panel of four professionals who scored the quality of presentation, identification of key problems and turnaround plan.  

The competition was open to all high schools who partner with Gwynedd Mercy to offer a Dual Enrollment program. Neshaminy is very proud of these outstanding BCIT students. These wins are dedicated to Janet Dougherty.

BCIT Academic Senior Certificate Awards

BCIT Students Meet Grant Challenge with MOS Certifications

Students enrolled in the high school’s BCIT Information Technology 2 course have passed the Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Test for Excel.  This is an industry certification administered by Microsoft and recognized worldwide.  Over the past four years (including our current school year), Neshaminy High School has generated a 96% student passing rate for the exam.  This year, students benefited from a grant given by the Buxmont Chapter of the PA Society for Tax and Accounting Professionals (PSTAP) for the purpose of purchasing the Microsoft test vouchers and challenging students to take the exam.  The grant permitted all students in the class to sit for the exam and eliminated a test fee of $90. The students and BCIT Department are most appreciative of the PSTAP’s generosity. Notable certifications can open doors of opportunity and contribute to more self-confidence as students work towards their career goals.  The Information Technology courses are taught by BCIT teacher, Janis Innocenti.  Instruction aims to develop advanced Excel skills involving formulas, validation, charting, database filtering, integration, pivot tables and financial functions. 

 

NHS Students Earn 189 College Credits with BCIT Curriculum

In June, fifty-four Neshaminy High School students will be receiving college transcripts from Gwynedd Mercy University.  The student transcripts will show three college credits for each Dual Enrollment course taken at Neshaminy High School through the BCIT Department.  This has amounted to 189 college credits for the 2018-2019 school year.  These credits are transferrable to other universities.  Students taking Honors Accounting 2, Honors Accounting 3, Honors Microeconomics, Honors Macroeconomics or Honors Information Technology 2 are eligible to participate in this partnership with Gwynedd Mercy University.  The BCIT curriculum was approved by the university as aligning with their complementary course syllabi and textbooks.

Dual Enrollment is an educational partnership that can be very advantageous for students when planning for undergraduate study. It prepares the student for a fast paced college classroom in the first semester and helps situate students to succeed.  It affords students the opportunity to take courses in other areas of study because the Dual Enrollment credits satisfy degree requirements.  And thirdly, Dual Enrollment courses contribute to tuition savings and may lead to graduating a semester early.

20 BCIT Students Accepted to PFEW Program

 

This summer, twenty Business, Computer and Information Technology students plan to attend the Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW) Program.  PFEW is a unique educational experience designed for high school sophomores and juniors to learn about career opportunities while taking an active role in operating a simulated business.  PFEW is open to students from all across Pennsylvania and offers a college campus experience for one week at Lycoming College and Penn College.

The student operated businesses are judged in the areas of management, return on new assets, a marketing and advertising campaign and a stockholders’ presentation.  Also, many keynote speakers creatively address the role of business in our economy and share messages to inspire the participants.

Each student received a scholarship valued at $1,500 through the PFEW organization.  The Lower Bucks County Chamber of Commerce takes a very active role in supporting PFEW. Mr. Deal received the Spirit of Neshaminy Award from the school district for 2019.  The Spirit of Neshaminy Award reflects the ability to challenge students to grow and encourage them to achieve in the classroom and beyond.  The teacher's contributions exemplify outstanding commitment to the profession, district and community.  There were five recipients of the Neshaminy Award of Excellence for 2019.  Congratulations to all educators.

Neshaminy Senior Jackson Joiner wins $3,000

TruMark Financial Literacy Scholarship

Neshaminy senior Jackson Joiner won a $3,000 scholarship sponsored through TruMark Financial Credit Union by placing second in the TruMark Financial Jeopardy Contest on May 8^th at the company headquarters in Fort Washington.  Jackson represented Neshaminy to compete against ten high schools in the Bucks and Montgomery counties.  This was a jeopardy format event testing the students’ financial knowledge.  Jackson is a Business, Computer and Information Technology student at Neshaminy High School enrolled in the Finance and Investment course.

There were three rounds of competition: regular jeopardy, double jeopardy and final jeopardy.  Jeopardy categories included banking, types of credit, the workplace, taxes, budgeting, investments, purchasing a car, retirement and estate planning, bankruptcy, insurance, consumer rights, bank services, credit ratings and laws, and buying a home.  We congratulate Jackson on his scholarship and wish him continued success as he attends Bucks County Community College in the fall with plans to graduate from Temple University.

 

APRIL

NESHAMINY FBLA TAKES HOME MULTIPLE AWARDS!

The Business, Computer and Information Technology Department is proud to recognize the Neshaminy Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) members. The club wanted to raise funds for the 2018-19 state project, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society so they sponsored our second annual 5K Walk/Run at the high school in October, sold t-shirts, raffled donated baskets and collected change, totaling over $3,100.  With their effort, Neshaminy received top honors placing 10th out of 299 total state chapters in total funds raised. The NHS Chapter also earned the “Gold Seal Chapter” and the “Outstanding Chapter” awards.

Thirty-two Neshaminy High School FBLA members attended the State Leadership Competition on April 8-10, 2019 in Hershey, PA.  The students competed against the top winners in their events from across the state of Pennsylvania. Freshman Ohenmaa Ofosu-Mensah placed FIRST in Introduction to Financial Math. The NHS Entrepreneurship Team of Joey Nolan & Dan Gutman placed FOURTH and Aaron Lewis took home FIFTH place in Banking & Financial Systems.  These four students will be heading to the National FBLA Leadership Conference and Competition in San Antonio, TX in June where they will compete against the top finishers in the United States, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam. The Emerging Business Issues team of Andrew Schmitz and Steven Muller placed TENTH.

Aaron Lewis placed 5^th in Investments and Stock Markets, and Steven Muller placed 8^th in Social Media Marketing in Open Events Competitions.

BCIT STUDENTS VISIT ALEXANDER HAMILTON EXHIBITS

in PHILADELPHIA

The trip focused on the extraordinary life of Alexander Hamilton, his contributions to the US financial system, as well as his connection to the US Constitution, the American Revolution and the city of Philadlephia.  It is Hamilton's economic philosophies that built the modern American capitalist economy.  BCIT students from Macroeconomics, Microeconomics and the Finance courses attended the trip.

 NHS FBLA - Top 15% of all PA Chapters

Congratulations to the members of the Future Business Leaders of America club (FBLA).  Our NHS Chapter is in the top 15% of all Pennsylvania chapters and is up for both the Pennsylvania William Selden Outstanding Chapter Award and the National Hollis and Kitty Guy Gold Chapter Award.  In addition, 10^th grade FBLA VP Steven Muller submitted a video bringing awareness to the 2018 state project—Alzheimer’s Association and is in the top 7 in Pennsylvania.  The winning chapters and video will be announced at the State Leadership Conference and Competition in April. Neshaminy has 38 FBLA members competing in various events. Great job FBLA and good luck at States!!

December

Hour of Code

BCIT classrooms participated in Hour of Code across the district. At the high school, students viewed videos showcasing the international event with celebrity endorsements and the importance of computer science.  This week students learned more about job opportunities right here in the state of Pennsylvania regarding computer science skills. Activities provided by Code.org enabled students to experiment with code using game applications.  They also learned to create code working obstacle courses and applied sequencing through Java programming languages.  Students worked with encryption activities and text compression exercises.  The text compression lessons taught students how to reduce the size of music files as repeated syntax was removed and replaced with indicators to reduce large percentages of file space. 

Eighth grade students were creating their own personal web pages using HTML.   They also completed coding activities on code.org/learn. “Play That Tune App” was very popular. It featured a piano keyboard and had students play different musical notes using the code provided. Students also enjoyed the “Create Your Own Sports” activity. They coded a sports player to move and shoot the basketball at certain times. Timing was important to consider when coding the shots. The seventh grade continued coding in Scratch. Some students also accessed the code.org activity, “Google Logo”, which allows you to customize and animated the Google logo using Scratch code. Other students enjoyed creating their own unique version of the Google logo.  Fifth grade students used drag and drop visual blocks to write code to solve a series of puzzles with popular animated series.  Fifth grade students also completed the Google Doodle challenge which encourages students to find the shortest, most efficient sequence of code.

Hour of Code is an international effort designed to reach millions of students all across the globe for the purpose of demystifying computer science and showing that anybody can learn the basics.

Accounting Career Day For BCIT Students at Temple 

On October 24^th, forty-one students from Neshaminy High School’s BCIT Department traveled to Temple University to benefit from the PICPA (Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants) Accounting Career Day.  This was a free program offered to students for the purpose of learning more about diverse career opportunities in the accounting profession, to discover the advantages of the CPA designation, as well as gain exposure to a college environment.  Students received valuable information from senior Temple accounting students (one being a Neshaminy HS alumnus) and interacted with professionals working in the field who shared life experiences and current career opportunities.  The BCIT Department at Neshaminy High School offers three levels of accounting instruction to high school students.

Through Dual Enrollment

With Gwynedd Mercy University

 Neshaminy High School partners with Gwynedd Mercy University to offer college credit for specified courses.  These courses are offered through the Business, Computer and Information Technology Department at the high school where students may choose to participate in the Dual Enrollment Program.  This year, 76 students are participating in the program and will receive three undergraduate credits from Gwynedd Mercy University in June for each specified course. Students may enroll in more than one BCIT Dual Enrollment course and graduate high school with a maximum of fifteen college credits.  Since some students do have multiple BCIT classes, the total Dual Enrollment processed this year is 100 classes among 76 students. BCIT Students Create NHS Food Pantry 

 

The project is intended to have participation grow to include activism by the entire high school and Neshaminy community.  News of the food pantry recently spread to Tawanka Elementary School where they collected food donations for an entire week in April.  The high school had a food donation day on May 4th to coincide with MiniThon’s spirit week.  And this year, the district’s Art Show coordinators are asking families to bring a canned food item to donate to the new NHS food pantry.  

The project has demonstrated to students that an entrepreneurial mindset can positively address social needs through the resourcefulness of many, innovative thought and the generous desire people have to help others.  The NHS food pantry is also known as the SILO, an acronym for Social Intrapreneurs Lifting Others.  Let’s work together to fill the SILO for the summer months!  If you have an interest in helping, contact Janet Dougherty, BCIT Entrepreneurship teacher at the high school.

District Creates IT Internships for BCIT Students 

 

Ten BCIT high school students are gaining valuable work experience as Information Technology interns with the district’s IT Department.  The BCIT Department was approached by Kathy Christie, Director of Information Technology, to see if there would be student interest with an internship program.  There was a significant response and ten BCIT students were selected for the mentoring experience.

Kathy Christie views the opportunity as a great introduction to how IT supports the uses of technology.  “My hope is that students can be involved in helping teach other students the correct ways of using district technology.  Selection process is extremely important.  It is not entirely focused on academics and tech savvy.  It is about students who can prove their trustworthiness. With security being a primary concern, opening the door for student internships allows them to see more of what IT supports.  This transfer of knowledge can continue as we develop future phases of the program.  My goal is to ultimately have a student help desk, as we start future initiatives with eventually having a 1:1 at the high school. I am excited about how the program can grow because the ideas are endless.”

The IT interns are volunteering after school to assist in the preparation and distribution of 1500 chromebooks for elementary students.  The interns are unpacking devices, registering the assets, initiating the Google management system, and then wiring devices to portable carts.  The interns will be present when carts are delivered to elementary classrooms so that they can see first-hand the excitement brought about by their volunteer work.  The interns are Crystal and Kyle Teoh, Andrew Schmitz, Megan Lucas, Jacklynn Campos, Jeri Odgers, Matt Roach, Rebecca Bertel, Shannon Forman and Brendan McGoldrick.

Janet Dougherty, BCIT Department Chairperson, is grateful for the project-based learning opportunity.  “It is the ‘learning by doing’ that engages students with a sense of purpose, connects the classroom to real-life applications and may influence career paths.  Our students have many talents that are tied to creative energy.  It is a win-win for the students and district to partner in more project-based learning opportunities benefiting all involved.”

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 Virtual Business Accounting software was purchased through a Neshaminy Education Foundation Grant award.  The software offers an engaging simulation where students generate accounting working papers, review accounting statements and make operating decisions to solve complex problems for a simulated business. The Neshaminy High School LifeSmarts Team placed fourth in the state of Pennsylvania for the National Consumers League Competition held in February. There were over 300 teams who participated in the competition across the state. Neshaminy progressed through two rounds of competition.  It was in the final round of the state competition where the team answered a 100 question test and placed second in the state. Neshaminy’s team is comprised of five Business, Computer and Information Technology students who have or are currently taking the BCIT Finance and Investment course. They are Elena Donato, Ryan Connaughton, Tom Edwards, Brynn MacDougall and Sammi Covell.  We congratulate the team for their competition success and the recognition they bring to Neshaminy High School and the BCIT Department.

LifeSmarts is a program of the National Consumers League. The competition focused on five key topic areas: consumer rights and responsibilities, the environment, health and safety, personal finance, and technology. It complements school curriculum already in place and also aligns with national business education standards. The first place team is Dallas HS in Dallas, PA and will represent Pennsylvania at the National Competition in Denver this April.
