Help the 2030 class leave their mark of service by helping the people of South Sudan gain access to clean water!

As a class, the 6th graders read A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park which brings light to the struggles, challenges, and illnesses that millions of people face in Sudan each day due to the lack of clean water.  The main character, Salva Dut, recounts his own journey as he became one of the Lost Boys of Sudan and how he was able to turn a negative experience into a positive one.

Back in 2003, he founded the charity, “Water for Sudan.” Their mission is to deliver sustainable quality of life services to the people of South Sudan by efficiently providing access to clean, safe water and improving hygiene and sanitation practices in areas of great need.

The 2024 Iron Giraffe Challenge calls on schools to each raise a minimum of $1000 toward a new drilling rig, with a goal to raise $150,000 from all schools combined.  Since this is our 1st year reading this text and bringing this service project into 6th grade, we set our donation goal to $500.

We are putting a few fundraising opportunities together to maximize our efforts and to support our Sandburg Striders.  Below are a few ways you can help the 6th grade.

    1. In homerooms, we will be running a “Fill-a-Jug” competition, from May 13-17th.  The homeroom that raises the most $ donations in a week, will earn Pretzels.  (The competition will be between each grade level)
    2. We will be selling rubber bracelets that say, “Water for Sudan,” during lunches. These bracelets will cost $2 each and sales will begin May 20th.
    3. We are also accepting Monetary donations→Scan Here  A qr code with a black backgroundDescription automatically generated

*The 6th grade students will be participating in a Walk-a-thon and competing in different challenges and water activities on June 6th to celebrate the culmination of this service project and also give them an opportunity to experience some of the hardships, while having fun.

    Thank you for your support!
