- School Board Policy #516- Academic Eligibility
This policy aims to encourage students to do co-curricular activities and athletes to meet their academic requirements.
Practices:
- Practices are as scheduled from 3 pm until 5 pm.
- You must attend all practices unless one of the following applies:
- Practice is canceled by the coach.
- You are ill and not at school the day of practice (you must notify the coach via email [dwolstenholme@neshaminy.org] as to your absence and why before 11 am).
- You have made a previous arrangement with the coach regarding practice on a given day.
Matches:
- Varsity and JV matches begin at 3:00 PM.
- Players are to stay until the completion of the match for Varsity and JV.
- Players must stay with the team in the team area and not wander around. Please advise the coaching staff if you need to use the restroom so they aren’t looking for you when it’s your turn.
- All players will travel to and from all away matches on the team bus. When exiting the bus at the bowling alley, everyone will check to ensure the bus is clean and nothing is left behind. Please be considerate when selecting music, especially if you’re not using headphones or AirPods.
- To be eligible to play in a match, you must sign in to school before 5th period (10:55 am).
- You must attend the practice or game before the match to be eligible to play unless the absence has been previously approved by the coach.
Behavior:
- Your behavior should always be exemplary.
- Players have to treat coaches, teammates, parents, trainers, and officials with respect.
- As a member of the team, you represent yourself, the team, the school, and the district; therefore, no inappropriate behavior will be tolerated. Inappropriate behavior includes, but is not limited to, disparaging comments, actions, or behavior, including foul language and obscene gestures.
- Any behavior problems will be dealt with by the coach, school, and parents, if necessary.
Academic Eligibility:
- Grades are essential to remaining a part of the team.
- Players will be missing some of their last-period classes for away matches, and they are responsible for any missed work.
- Eligibility is run every Friday during the Winter Season.
- In order to be eligible to play the next week, a player may have no more than one failing grade.
- Players will be told on Monday if they are eligible for the week.
- A player ineligible for the first time may attend practice but cannot participate in any matches for that specific week.
- A player ineligible the second time will lose their privilege to practice as well as participate in any matches.
- If a player is ineligible a third time, they will lose their place in the team.
Suspension:
- In-school or out-of-school suspension will result in not being permitted to practice or play on the suspension dates.
- A meeting will be held after the suspension with the coach and the school to decide your future on the team.
Technology:
- No phones will be permitted during any practice or match – this includes listening to music, audiobooks, podcasts, etc., on AirPods or headphones, etc.
- If you are caught using your phone (AirPods/headphones) after being asked to put it away, it will be taken until the end of the practice/match.
Other sports during the bowling season:
- If you make Varsity, bowling is your only sport.
- If you make JV, you may participate in the other sport, but it will not interfere with bowling.
Participation:
- No one is guaranteed Varsity playing time just because they have attended practice or bowled a good game and/or series.
- You must EARN the right to play by being a good student, a leader, and an example to those around you, AKA a team player.
- A true team player knows how to put the team first, respects the rules and all those involved in the sport, and makes sacrifices for his teammates.
- To receive a Varsity letter, a player must participate in 40% of all the matches on the schedule, which is school policy. According to the SOL handbook, to qualify for participation in the postseason, a player must participate in 67% of the matches (24 games).
Logistics:
- Parents and siblings are not permitted in the team bowling area at ANY time. Morrisville Lanes rule is that all parents/spectators always stay behind the high tabletops.
- No food or drink is permitted in the bowling area, please keep it on the tables behind the lanes.
Dress Code:
- Uniform shirts and black slacks (no jeans, shorts, or leggings).
- Official Neshaminy spirit wear only.
- Upon arrival at the match, players will change into bowling uniforms and report to the assigned lanes for practice as soon as possible.
Communication:
Communication between the coaching staff, players, and parents is very important to the success of the team.
Players:
- When a player needs to talk to the coach, they should contact the coach directly.
- Players may approach the coach with any questions they have regarding themselves before or after practices/matches.
Parents:
- Parents are not permitted to discuss playing time, coaching strategies, comparison of other players to another student-athlete, or any other issue that relates to the management of the team.
- Prior to approaching the coach (before or after practice/matches), please ensure the athlete has attempted to resolve any issue on their own.
- Final decisions regarding the management of the team and who plays what position are solely at the discretion of the coaching staff and are not permitted to be questioned by parents.
- Any misconduct or challenging of these rules could result in dismissal from the team.
Fundraising:
Fundraising is essential to funding our program because it allows us to have a senior day, a banquet, purchase team shirts and senior gifts, etc. Fundraising is not optional, and everyone on the team must participate in the fundraising efforts.
