AE Honors American StudiesDr. Hensel has taught at NHS on a full-time basis since 2003. From the late 1970s until 2000, Dr. Hensel was a certified public accountant with experience in both public accounting and private industry. Dr. Hensel attended a small Catholic high school in Central Pennsylvania and earned his bachelors degree in accounting from Shippensburg University. When he decided he wanted to pursue his true interest, history, he enrolled at Temple University in 1990, and over a ten year period, while still working as an accountant, earned a Ph.D. in history. Dr. Hensel then enrolled at Widener University to earn his education credentials, and student taught at NHS in 2001. "I am an example that it is never too late to find and pursue what you want to do in life," Hensel said. "You need to go where your heart takes you."Dr. Hensel believes the key to success as a student is having balance among interests and careful prioritizing. "I always did what was needed to get good grades, and still had fun in high school and college," he said. Dr. Hensel finds the most enjoyable aspect of his job is interacting with his students, and trying to make complex ideas understandable. Dr. Hensel demands much from his students but says most students respond with tremendous effort and excellent results.
