Neshaminy High School boasts two prestigious jazz groups in our music department: the Jazz Band and the Jazz Ensemble. These instrumental groups are some of the most elite ensembles in the Neshaminy School District. The Jazz Ensemble is conducted by Trent Detwiler, and it rehearses Monday and Tuesday evenings from 6-8:30 PM. The group performs 8-10 times per year, which includes jazz festivals, concerts, district events, and community performances. The Neshaminy High School Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble have earned some of the highest ratings at area festivals, section, and soloist awards.  Each year, NHS hosts its own Jazz Festival. Bands from all over attend and compete for ratings and awards. “Top name” jazz musicians -- in recent years including Tim Warfield, Josh Lawrence, Orrin Evans, and Chad Lefkowitz-Brown -- are brought in to judge the festival and work with the NHS jazz groups.

Admission into the ensemble is done by audition only. All wind players (sax, trumpet, trombone, tuba) in our jazz groups have to be members in good standing of a Concert Band class. All rhythm section players (drums, guitar, bass, piano, mallets) in NHS are welcome to audition. We will hold our annual Orientation Meeting this year on Monday, October 14th, 2024 at 6 PM. At that time, audition materials will be distributed and questions will be answered. We also do a few “run through’s” before the audition takes place, to give students a better understanding of the audition material (dates TBA). We hope to see you at the Jazz Orientation!
