• Reading Prompts

     

    Reading the prompt for the open-ended question can be a challenge.  It is important to understand what the question is asking in order to set up your T-chart.  Read the following sample prompts, circle what you are to answer and underline the details that you are to include.  Your T-chart will have this format.  Every prompt has three things that need to be included.  Number the three things you need to include in your answer.

    Prompt 1 – Analyze the speaker’s attitude toward the goldfinches and their world.  Use at least two examples from the poem to support your response.

    Prompt 2 – Describe the effect created by figurative language and imagery in “John Henry.”  Support your answer with at least two examples from the poem.

    Prompt 3 – Identify at least one trait that Rudolph Santiago possessed.  Explain how this trait affected the events of the story.  Use at least two examples from the passage to support your response.

    Prompt 4 – In your own words, summarize the poem “The Men That Don’t Fit In.”  Include at least three details from the poem in your response.

    Prompt 5 – How are the men that do not fit in and the black sheep alike?  How are they different?  Use three examples from the poems to support your response.

    Prompt 6 – Pearl S. Buck helped to establish an awareness and appreciation of other cultures and the importance of human rights.  Use three examples from the passage to support this statement.

    Prompt 7 – What kind of person is Sylvia?  Explain what her thoughts and actions reveal about her character.  Use three examples from the passage to support your response.

    Prompt 8 – Why would consumers most likely be interested in purchasing the SP-2000 CD Player?  Use three examples from the passage to support your response.
