Writer’s Workshop - We are very excited about our new writing program, Writing Fundamentals! This program also includes a grammar component called The Fundamentals of Grammar and Conventions. Each program is comprised of a series ofunits of study. Each unit of study includes 5 – 10 mentor texts. These texts are used to demonstrate an author’s craft or style, purpose, and genre. Mentor texts also serve as models for capitalization, punctuation, parts of speech, sentence structure, sentencefluency, and paragraphing. Writer’s Workshop consists of interactive read-aloud lessons and mini-lessons that encourage students to closely examine a text and guide them through the writing process; composing, developing, planning, revising, editing, publishing, andreflecting. Independent writing timeencourages the children to practice the skills that were presented. Finally, the students are provided with an opportunity to share their work with the class. One of the most important goals of Writer’s Workshop is to establish a safe environment for writing. Within this atmosphere, children tend to take risks in their writing and develop a greater interest in writing.
