    Good Habits, Great Readers
is our core reading program.  This program consists of two strands of Literacy Learning (Guided Reading and SharedReading).  Shared Reading is whole group instruction of reading strategies. During Guided Reading, the children are working in a small group, at their instructional level, and based on the needs of the students.

In addition to Good Habits, Great Readers, we also use the Café system.  Café is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expand Vocabulary.  This is a research based assessment system  that includes explicit instruction in the use of reading strategies,goal-setting with students, and developing small group instruction that is focused on a specific reading strategy.

We also do theDaily 5, which is a series of literacy tasks: Read to Self, Read to Someone,Work on Writing, Word Work, and Listen to Reading.  These literacy tasks are clearly modeled and practiced.  It is structured so that all children are working at their “just right” reading level and taking responsibility for their learning.  As part of their independent reading, the children have a response journal to write about their reading.  Writing in response to reading encourages children to think about their reading and apply reading strategies to their writing.
