    Title 1 Reading Specialist

     

     

    Joan Brooks has worked as a reading specialist in the Neshaminy School District since February of 2012, first as a long-term substitute at Pearl S. Buck Elementary and then as a Title 1 Reading Specialist at Lower Southampton Elementary.  She joined the staff of Herbert Hoover Elementary in August 2013. 

     

    Previously, she worked for nine years in the School District of Philadelphia as an English Language Arts and Social Studies in a bilingual program (English/Spanish), and as an ESL specialist.  She also worked for five years as staff developer for the American Reading Company, serving as trainer and coach for principals and teachers using the100 Book Challenge,® an independent reading system used to foster wide reading and ensure reading achievement. 

     

    Prior to her career in education, Ms. Brooks worked in youth ministry, providing leadership training, service opportunities and retreat experiences for youth; and in community relations in the corporate sector. 

     

    Ms. Brooks earned a Master in Multicultural Education from Eastern University in 2001 and is certified in Elementary Education, Middle Years English, Spanish and as a Reading Specialist and a ESL Program Specialist.  Her undergraduate degree from La Salle University is in Psychology, Religious Studies and Spanish.

     

    Born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Yardley, Ms. Brooks has lived in Scranton, Pa., in El Salvador, Central America, and now resides with her husband in Philadelphia. 

    In addition to teaching, Ms. Brooks enjoys reading, hiking, traveling, and music.
