Dear Parents,
Welcome to First Grade!
Each month your child will bring home a calendar of Math homework activities. Please work with your child each evening as she/he completes the activities. At the end of the month sign the calendar and have your child return it to school. If your daughter/son has a particularly busy evening, do that activity with her/him on another evening that week.
These activities will reinforce the concepts we are working on in class. They are short but should allow you to gain an understanding of what your child knows and how you can help her/his understanding. It will also give your first grader time to play after a very busy, full day at school.
We recommend you and your child prepare a Math activity box, bag, or basket so that any needed supplies will always be at hand. Make this a special activity that you do with your child to build enthusiasm and understanding that the box is important and used for homework. Try to keep the Math Box in the same place to establish routine. Some of the supplies will be sent from school and others you will need to get. The following is a suggested list:
Bag of beans (buy a bag of dry beans at the grocery store and transfer it to a zip-lock bag or plastic container to use all year)
DiceAddition flash cards (bought at a dollar store or made on index cards)Blank Ten Frame cards (we will send these home)
Ten Frame flashcards (we will send these home)
Place Value Chart (we will send this home)Number cards 1 through 100 (these can be made on index cards)Paper and pencilsWe appreciate your cooperation. Your child will be taught many math concepts this year and your encouragement and enthusiasm will be essential to her/his learning.
