Service Learning

We believe that service learning benefits not only the recipient, but also the students that are working to help others.  Recently a flyer was sent home inviting you to participate in our Martin Luther King Day of Kindness.  Below is a copy of that flyer.  If you have not returned the sign up slip and are interested in coming, you are free to email me or send in a note indicating what service project you would like to do.

Martin Luther King Day

A Day of Kindness

What is the MLK Day of Service?

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.

This year we will have our 3rd annual Day of Service at Pearl Buck. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community.

What can we do?

This year, on January 21st we are off from school, but we will be “on” for a day of kindness.  We are putting together a program to celebrate this holiday and give back to our community.  We will be starting that day at Pearl Buck in the cafeteria with a short program featuring songs (Pat and Kyle from Neshaminy High School will joining us again), poems and talks about Martin Luther King.  Immediately following the program we will go to our service site.  Listed below are some activities that we have planned.  If you are interested in participating, please fill out the slip and return it to Mrs. Lenahan ASAP.  Parents will be responsible for transporting and chaperoning their children to their volunteer site.

This year we will be getting MLK day T-Shirts from MLK 365 Philadelphia.  If you would like a T-Shirt, please indicate your size on the attached page.  I was only able to get 100 shirts, so they will be first come first serve.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lenahan
